Cancer diagnoses and deaths
ImprovingNew diagnoses per 100,000 people (age-standardised)
Deaths from cancer under 75, per 100,000 people (age-standardised)
What it means: new cases of cancer diagnosed in England each year, leaving out the two most common skin cancers, which are rarely serious, and the death rate from cancer before the age of 75. Both rates are adjusted for the age of the population so years can be compared: there are more diagnoses mainly because there are more older people, while the rate of diagnosis has changed much less (663.2 per 100,000 in the latest year). Diagnoses dipped in 2020 when fewer people came forward during Covid. The early death rate has fallen steadily. Status compares the death rate with the year before: a change of 2% or more counts.
