Deaths from alcohol
ImprovingAlcohol-specific deaths per 100,000 people (age-standardised)
What it means: deaths from conditions caused only by alcohol, mostly alcohol-related liver disease, plus alcohol poisoning. It does not include deaths where alcohol was one of several causes, such as some cancers, heart disease and accidents, so the full toll is higher. Rates are adjusted for the age of the population. The rate was broadly flat through the 2010s, rose sharply from 2020 and has started to fall back. Men’s rate (20.2) is about twice women’s (9.7). A change of 5% or more in the rate on the year before counts.
