What it means: meters that send readings automatically and show usage in pounds and pence. A smart meter that has lost its connection, often after a change of supplier, works only as an ordinary meter, so the working figure matters as much as the total. Figures cover meters run by large suppliers, which supply most homes. A change of 2 points or more over a year counts.
