Electricity generation by fuel
For contextWhat it means: electricity generated in the UK each year, stacked by fuel. The total has fallen since the mid-2000s as appliances and lighting became more efficient and heavy industry shrank, and the UK now imports more electricity through undersea cables. Coal has gone and wind has replaced much of it. Bioenergy is mainly wood pellets burned at Drax and other power stations. The 2025 figures are provisional.
