Target: 60% of children aged 5 to 16 usually walking or cycling to school by 2035 (third cycling and walking investment strategy (CWIS3), June 2026). The target was set in 2026 and the latest figures are for 2023, so it is too early to judge progress.

What it means: how children usually get to school, as reported by an adult in the household in the National Travel Survey. Primary pupils are more likely to walk than secondary pupils, who more often take the bus. Cycling to school remains rare. Single years move around because the survey sample is modest.
