Public EV chargers
BehindExpectation: around 300,000 public chargers by 2030 (Taking charge: the electric vehicle infrastructure strategy, 2022, which the government has said it is on course for). Starting from 102,771 in January 2025, when the current measure begins, the straight path needs 152,773 by now.
What it means: chargers anyone can use, at car parks, streets, supermarkets and motorway services. DfT changed its headline measure in 2025 to count every charger that can be used at the same time; the earlier, lower count of charging devices is shown for comparison and continues to be published. About a fifth of public chargers are rapid chargers of 50kW or more. Home chargers are not included.
