Who carries out R&D, 2024

What it means: all research and development carried out in the UK by businesses, universities, government and charities, whoever pays for it, in cash terms. ONS revised its method in 2022, so only 2022 onwards is shown. A previous government aimed for 2.4% of GDP by 2027, a level now exceeded; the current government has set budgets for public R&D rather than a share of GDP, so no target is shown.
