What it means: businesses whose main activity is running a pub or bar, from the register of VAT and PAYE businesses. Most pubs are run as single businesses, so this is close to a count of pubs, but a company running several pubs counts once, and pub restaurants may be counted as restaurants. Nightclubs (licensed clubs) have fallen by −37.0% since 2010. ONS does not publish pubs and bars separately. Shown for context.
