What it means: open cases in the Crown Court in England and Wales, which hears the most serious criminal cases. The backlog grows when more cases arrive than are completed. It rose sharply when courts closed during Covid and has kept rising since, which means longer waits for victims, witnesses and defendants. A change of 2% or more on a year earlier counts.
